Mystery of Smokey Joe
It’s not all that much of a mystery. JoAnne Wenzinger who created the Mill Race Village Shops, is part of a family business that often gets called in to do demolition. They have done may such jobs including several hotels in Atlantic City to clear space for Casinos.
They found this stone during one of the demolitions. The way I heard the story was that Smokey Joe’s was not one of the businesses in the building that they had to demolish. But they found the stone anyway. So they had no idea who Smokey Joe was.
JoAnne who has a heart of gold, saved the stone, and placed it as a tribute to old times, in the corner of the property for 33 White Street. It is still there today, and we get questions about who Smokey Joe is. I have thought that I should make up some crazy story to tell, but in reality, it’s better if it just stays a mystery.
